Customs Excise and VAT Superintendent Golamur Rahman of Feni, who was caught in the ACC's trap for accepting bribes, was sentenced to 5 years in jail and fined Tk 1 lakh.

The learned Judge of the Special Judge Court, Noakhali, Mr. A.N.M. Morshed Khan today convicted the accused Golamur Rahman, Superintendent, Customs Excise and VAT Office, Feni, Address: 1194 Moglatli Bazar, Thana- Doublemuri, District- Chittagong under section 161 of the Penal Code Act, 1860 and sentenced to 02 (two) years rigorous imprisonment and 50 ,000/- further imprisonment for 02 (two) months in default of fine and 03 (three) years imprisonment under Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947 and 02 (two) months imprisonment in default of fine of Rs.50,000/- . The sentences awarded against the accused shall run concurrently. The accused was present before the learned Court when the judgment was delivered.

Event Summary:

Haji Salim is a businessman from Chittagong. He buys garment items from Chittagong port through auction. The said garment item was being sent from Chittagong Port to Dhaka on 19/11/2008. Accused Golamur Rahman and Inspector Md Shahjahan declared the legal goods in his cabard van illegal and demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to get rid of them. Complainant Haji Salim agreed to pay Tk 60,000. When the matter was referred to the Anti-Corruption Commission, Integrated District Office, Chittagong-2, the accused was arrested red-handed under the leadership of the then official director of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Sheikh Abdus Salam, while paying bribes subject to the commission's approval.
